WASHINGTON --U. S. healthcare officials on Friday defended the practice of providing generic drugs to patients without having to ask their doctors about the drug, noting that it was not covered by the Food and Drug Administration.
The company said it would consider a generic version of Viagra, a widely used drug for erectile dysfunction, for patients who have been prescribed it because they are suffering from severe side effects or were taking other medications.
“We’re going to make sure our patients have what they need when they need it,” said Jim Sage, chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc., a biopharmaceutical company that makes Viagra and Cialis. “They should be able to get that medication because the FDA approved it, and it should be affordable.”
Sage said that’s true, but he noted that some patients could have generic drugs with an added cost. “We are going to work with the FDA to do something about that,” he said.
Viagra’s patent has expired, and the generic version has yet to be approved by the FDA.
Sage said that Pfizer’s decision to make Viagra available to patients without a prescription “was an important step forward for them.”
“We are going to do everything we can to ensure that generic drugs do not become unaffordable for patients who need it,” he said. “That is what our patients need.”
Some pharmaceutical companies, such as Pfizer Inc., have been trying to market their own generics for years, but they have never tried to convince patients to use a generic version of the drug. Pfizer’s patent on Viagra expired in 2006, and the drug’s patent was extended to October 2013, to allow for generic competition, as well as generic competition in many other areas.
The company was working with the Food and Drug Administration to get FDA approval for its generic version of the drug. But the agency had not approved it to make generic versions of the drug in 2017, and the FDA was still reviewing the case. In March, FDA regulators in Washington said they would not approve the generic version of Viagra because it was not covered by the FDA.
Some patients who take the drug may be able to access generic versions of the drug. In some cases, they may be able to take other drugs as well. For example, some men may be able to obtain generic versions of Viagra through a private, online consultation with a medical provider, and some may be able to get generic versions of Cialis.
“It’s important for patients to have access to affordable medications,” said Sage, chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc.
“We have always been patient advocates,” he said.
But some patients who take Viagra may not be able to take their generic version of the drug. Some patients are able to take another drug, but the company is not required to disclose its status.
“We’re going to work with the FDA to ensure that generic medications do not become unaffordable for patients who need it,” Sage said. “That’s what our patients need. That’s what our patients need.”

Viagra has a generic alternative, sildenafil citrate, but the company said it will keep the company’s generic version of the drug under wraps until the FDA approves it.
